Muzahmiyah Weekend Residence       |     Al Muzahmiyah,  KSA

Designed by Abourass Design Lab, this weekend getaway in Al Muzahmiyah, Saudi Arabia, was designed with a focus on traditional craftsmanship while seeking opportunities to reinvent current conventions in construction on remote residential  properties in Saudi Arabia. The primary load-bearing structure of this home consists of compressed rammed earth walls, reinforced with an integrated substructural diaphragm to support the larger spans within the home. The design motifs throughout, including the screen patterns, are inspired by the overlapping forms of palm reeds, evoking a sense of nostalgia linked to traditional imagery in Al Muzahmiyah's rich agricultural past. A large internal courtyard serves as the heart of the home, providing a versatile space for entertaining while also promoting natural ventilation and an inward focus. Trombe walls, strategically placed throughout the property, help regulate air movement and enhance the home’s thermal performance. Additionally, the property sits adjacent to a natural seasonal lagoon, which not only serves as a functional water reservoir for the agricultural needs of the family farm but also offers serene views, transforming it into a central feature of the home’s landscape design. This project embodies both sustainability and traditional craftsmanship, making it a true retreat in total harmony with its surroundings.
